My shooting day

MY SHOOTING DAY with William Asprey

William Asprey is the 43 year old founder and chairman of the William & Son luxury goods store and gunmakers. A keen shot since childhood, he shoots regularly in the season and organises the annual GWCT game dinner at Le Gavroche. Inevitably his 12 bore sidelock bears the name William & Son Gun & Rifle makers.

When do you get your things together before a day's shooting?
I always get my kit ready the night before, and leave plenty of time for my journey. I don't normally have breakfast as I don't want to get up earlier than I have to!

Do you have a favourite shooting suit or sweater?
I tend to use the same jersey as the previous time especially if I shot well in it, but I don't like to be too hot and have too many layers as I then feel restricted. You have to be comfortable to shoot well. All the clothes I have come from William & Son.

Which shoot - do you have your own, belong a syndicate or take days?
I do not have my own shoot, nor do I belong to a syndicate, but I do take days at Well Barn (Oxfordshire) every season which is a bit like home from home for me as I have been shooting there for many years and know the estate really well.

Your company - do you have friends who you regularly enjoy shooting with. Who are they?
I certainly do as the company is an important part of the day, and some of those I enjoy shooting with are Tom Buchan, Jamie Lee, Peter Schwerdt and many others.

Do you have a favourite shoot, and a drive in particular which has been memorable?
My favourite shoot is Well Barn and one of the most memorable drives is called Moulsford Belt, which is a relatively new drive on the estate and is very exciting.

Are you tense on the first drive of the day - do you prefer the first bird to go to someone else?
Always!! The first bird can set the tone for the whole day, but if the first bird comes to me I will take it!!

Mid-morning drink - does it work?
You always have to be careful about drink driving and so pacing oneself is always important. The mid-morning drink can work if you are not shooting so well, but if I am shooting well I tend to forego as it as I don't want to upset my shooting! It is probably all in the mind but better to be safe than sorry!

Do you prefer to eat at lunchtime or shoot through with a meal at the end of the day?
I prefer to break for lunch because if you shoot through some of the Guns sometimes disappear straight after the shoot and skip lunch and so it is not such a social occasion.

Honestly - do you always clean your gun afterwards?
Always. I try and do it before getting in the car and going home as when I get home I really don't feel like it. I have a cleaning kit permanently in the car so it is quick and easy.

Enjoyment - what makes a good day?
Good company, good birds, a good lunch, and beautiful scenery. And if possible good weather as I much prefer being dry when I shoot!!
